Human agency in the age of AI

About

Aliva Institute is an independent, non-commercial initiative founded in Sweden to improve understanding of advanced AI and preserve human agency as AI systems become increasingly capable and autonomous.

Mission

Aliva Institute is an independent, mission-driven organization focused on preserving human agency in an age of increasingly capable and autonomous artificial intelligence.

Our mission is to help individuals, institutions and society understand how advanced AI may reshape human decision-making, responsibility and control — and to ensure that people retain meaningful influence over the systems that increasingly shape their lives and future.

We pursue this mission through education, independent analysis, public dialogue and collaboration across technology, research, industry and policy.

We believe the future of AI should not simply happen to humanity. Humanity should retain the ability to shape it.

Why Aliva?

AI capabilities are advancing faster than public understanding, institutional readiness and governance frameworks. This is a global challenge, but how societies respond will depend on their institutions, culture, public debate and capacity to adapt.

Sweden and the Nordic countries already have strong AI research, applied innovation and growing work on AI policy and governance. Aliva aims to complement this ecosystem with a distinct focus: helping people and institutions understand the implications of increasingly capable and autonomous AI, while examining how human agency, responsibility and meaningful control can be preserved.

Aliva acts as a bridge between technology, policy and society. We translate fast-moving technical developments into questions and insights that decision-makers, journalists, organizations and the public can understand and act on.

Much of the AI safety debate rightly focuses on preventing catastrophic outcomes. Aliva complements that work by focusing on another fundamental question:

How do we preserve human understanding, control and decision-making power as AI systems become increasingly capable and autonomous?
